CRUISIN' THE AUCTIONS

This is a new section for RealPriceGuides and is more of a whim on my part to look back at last weeks auctions I have attended. I try to keep abreast of current values and trends in collecting and selling collectibles and antiques. Of course I could sit on my butt and use the internet as a lot of people do who report on the collectibles and antiques markets, but even as old as I am I still enjoy a good auction whether it is out in a farm field with snow blowing or in a nice climate controlled building on a Saturday morning or night.

First let me look at a trend that is going to happen in the near future. We have been bombarded by the reality shows lately of storage auctions, the pickers shows and the competitive antiques shows. Personally I think they have completely destroyed the collectibles and antiques markets but you know what they say about opinions. I have noticed there are one or two attempts at utilizing live auctions as a format for a reality show. They haven't gotten it right yet but it's just a matter of time. Now off my soap box and back to business.

If you have read any of my books you know that the auction is the second best place to pick up items for resale or to out on the shelf as a personal item. There are really only two types of auctions I attend, The original estate sale, which is the sale of all the belongings of a deceased person or persons. Here you are looking at items that have not been on the market and are available still at a reasonable price in most cases. This can take place either at the deceased home or in some case the auctioneer will move all of the belongings to a central location, allowing a larger viewing area and in a central location. I prefer the onsite location myself as sometimes the movement of the items will allow for either leaving behind or destroying items they consider not worth moving to the new location.

The second is the Saturday night house auction. Most American towns now have some type of house auction going on nearly every weekend either in the morning or late in the evening. This auction will be offering items from many different sellers brought together in one place. Normally I stay away from this auction as it is usually too crowded which means higher prices and this is not a good place to buy for resell in most cases. There are exceptions to this thinking.
